FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Rebecca Brewster
(770) 432-0628
April 17, 2013

Arlington, VA – The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) today released findings from the first phase of a two-part research initiative aimed at assessing the use of navigation systems in large trucks. This first phase of the research, which analyzed survey data from over 800 drivers and carriers, identifies different systems and how they are used, as well as industry perceptions of navigation system effectiveness.

“This research is an important first step in understanding the role of navigation systems in large truck crashes. By identifying the types of systems used, how drivers use them, and the types of crashes that may result from their use, industry stakeholders and policy makers can begin to implement crash mitigation strategies and hopefully, reduce the overall occurrence of these events,” commented Kendra Hems, President of the New York State Motor Truck Association.

Furthermore, this study identifies the key priorities that navigation system providers should address in order to meet the needs of the trucking industry. ATRI’s phase 2 work will expand the research by collecting and comparing quantitative data from navigation systems while in use. This next step will attempt to identify the technical basis for navigation system failures and inadequacies from a truck operations perspective.

A copy of this report is available from ATRI at www.atri-online.org.

ATRI is the trucking industry’s 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research organization. It is engaged in critical research relating to freight transportation’s essential role in maintaining a safe, secure and efficient transportation system.

April 1, 2013

Arlington, VA – The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) today launched a survey to update the 2012 Operational Costs of Trucking report. The brief on-line survey seeks to capture basic cost information from for-hire carriers such as driver pay, fuel costs, insurance premiums and lease or purchase payments. Carriers are asked to provide full year 2012 cost per mile and/or cost per hour data.

The results of this survey, combined with the previous Operational Costs of Trucking reports, will yield five full years (2008 – 2012) of trucking cost information derived directly from fleet operations. This research provides carriers with an important high-level benchmarking tool and government agencies with real world data for future infrastructure improvement analyses.

The operational cost data that for-hire motor carriers provide will be kept strictly confidential. The survey is available online at www.atri-online.org and results will be available later this year.

Arlington, VA – The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) today launched its third annual commercial driver survey to identify CSA impacts on trucking operations, as well as driver perceptions and attitudes toward FMCSA’s maturing regulatory program. This survey, which specifically seeks commercial driver input, will be compared and contrasted with data collected in 2011 and 2012 – where ATRI received responses from a representative sample of nearly 6,000 drivers (report available online at atri-online.org).

The brief on-line survey asks drivers for information on how their perceptions of CSA have changed or been affected as CSA continues its third full year of measuring commercial driver and motor carrier safety performance. The survey also seeks to capture attitudes toward the program and general understanding of its key components.

Drivers are encouraged to provide confidential input on CSA through ATRI’s survey, available online at www.atri-online.org. The aggregated and anonymized results of the survey will be available later this year.

Las Vegas, NV – At the annual meeting of the Truckload Carriers Association, the Women In Trucking (WIT) organization presented Rebecca Brewster, president and COO of the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), with its prestigious 2013 “Influential Woman in Trucking” award. This is the third time the award has been issued by WIT.

This year WIT reviewed more than 100 nominations before selecting Brewster. The award is presented to women in the trucking industry who are responsible for critical decision-making, have a proven track record in management, and who provide a role model for other women. Ellen Voie, WIT president and CEO noted, “We are excited to honor a woman who has had so much influence on commercial trucking.”

For the last ten years, Brewster has served as president and COO of ATRI, an independent research arm of the trucking industry. She also serves in many other capacities including ex officio member of the Transportation Research Board Executive Committee and several University Transportation Center boards.

Steve Williams, Chairman of Maverick Transportation and chair of the ATRI Board of Directors described the WIT award by saying, “The transportation industry and our nation at large is dependent on individuals whose vision for the safe and efficient movement of commerce is based upon factual research. Fortunately, Rebecca’s passion and dedication will continue to benefit the American public. She is very deserving of this recognition.”

December 4, 2012

Arlington, VA - The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) today released an analysis evaluating operational impacts on business and carrier supply chains that have occurred since the full rollout of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Compliance, Safety Accountability program in December 2010.

ATRI’s latest CSA report examines two year’s worth of data collection from motor carriers, commercial drivers, freight shippers and motor carrier safety enforcement personnel and provides the first comprehensive look at industry impacts including driver wages, freight pricing, changes in driver hiring, training and education, and safety improvements. The data also evaluates industry perceptions and knowledge of critical CSA program components.

Previous research from ATRI released this past fall focused on the relationship between CSA scores and crash risk. This industry impact study provides further insight into the impact of CSA on industry operations.

A copy of this report is available from ATRI at www.atri-online.org.

ATRI is the trucking industry’s 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research organization. It is engaged in critical research relating to freight transportation’s essential role in maintaining a safe, secure and efficient transportation system.
