Current research suggests that a shift from the motor fuels tax to a mileage-based user fee (MBUF) is technologically feasible. An MBUF would track the mileage of each vehicle and assess a user charge based on distance travelled. Other factors, such as the time of day when travel occurs and the type of roadway utilized, may influence the cost of each mile driven. ATRI is assessing the potential impact of mileage-based user fees on the trucking industry.
